Which conveyor belt should you choose?

Working in, managing or owning an industrial facility can be exciting. In most cases, you are directly or indirectly engaged with the manufacturing of a product, and it can be so rewarding to have an actual product to see as a result of your labour. However, whether you produce pens, mine coal or refine oil, there are always risks involved. As the husband of a woman who has worked in a factory for her entire career, safety in these situations is a topic close to my heart. This blog looks at safety considerations around equipment, supplies and just working in factories in general. I hope my ideas help guide you.

How do you move things around your business? If you have delicate components there is always the risk of damage if you rely on employees to carry them. If you have heavy materials, such as, engine parts or metal assemblies your employees will struggle to transport them if they are expected to use a trolley, or if you rely on them carrying the items by hand. A far more safe and efficient means of transporting items around your premises is to employ conveyor belts.

Why choose a conveyor belt?

Conveyor belts are the easiest way to move items rapidly with the minimum of risk. By placing items on the conveyor you know that they will reach their destination without being lost or damaged on the way. In addition to being the safer option a conveyor belt is also the most economical means of transport. Forcing employees to spend their time moving items around your business site reduces the amount of time that they can be employed on more useful tasks. Why take employees away from their work when conveyor belts can get your parts where they need to go more efficiently?

Which type of conveyor belt is best?

Conveyor belts come in many sizes and in a wide range of materials. The type of belt that is most suitable for your needs will depend on exactly what you are planning to transport and how that transportation will be accomplished. If you choose the wrong type of belt you risk damaging either the conveyor belt or your products so you will need to make some decisions about the operation of the conveyor before you go any further. These decisions will include:

  • The weight of the items to be carried

  • How fragile or easily marked their surface is

  • The way you want items to be loaded on to the conveyor

  • How fast the conveyor belts will move

  • Whether all your conveyor belts will be indoors or whether some part will be exposed to the elements

Answering these questions will help you to choose the conveyor belts that are most appropriate for your business. You may opt for a general purpose nylon or leather belt but if you need something more substantial then a metal hinge belt is likely to be your best choice. Whatever type of conveyor belt you choose it is vital that you take the time to plan out the operations of your conveyor belts before you commit to purchase. This will ensure that the belt you settle on is the right choice for your business.
