Crucial Maintenance Tips for a Long-Handle Broom with a Metal Bracket

Working in, managing or owning an industrial facility can be exciting. In most cases, you are directly or indirectly engaged with the manufacturing of a product, and it can be so rewarding to have an actual product to see as a result of your labour. However, whether you produce pens, mine coal or refine oil, there are always risks involved. As the husband of a woman who has worked in a factory for her entire career, safety in these situations is a topic close to my heart. This blog looks at safety considerations around equipment, supplies and just working in factories in general. I hope my ideas help guide you.

Choosing the right broom is not as straightforward as most people would want to believe. If you pick a broom haphazardly, the chances are high that you will choose one that does not meet your cleaning needs. A good broom should have a metallic bracket for strength and durability. However, a metallic rack is only as good as its maintenance. This article highlights tips for maintaining a metal bracket long-handled broom. Keep reading for insight.

Keep Away from Moist Areas

The durability of a long-handle broom depends on its storage conditions. Ideally, you should store a broom in a dry place. While some homeowners have a specific area to store their brooms, others leave them anywhere around the house. The latter strategy often works against a metallic bracket because of the moisture effect. Excess moisture causes rusting of the bracket, rotting of the wooden handle and loosening of the metallic frame. If you want a long-handle broom to last long, store it in a dry place once you are done sweeping. You should only leave a broom outside if you are sure it is not going to rain. Otherwise, always keep it indoors, such as inside a garage or tool rack.

Choose Replacement Screws Carefully

The metallic bracket on a broom is held in place by screws. As a broom ages and the head begins to deteriorate, you might need to replace the screws with new ones. The screws you choose can either be compatible or dissimilar with the metal bracket on a broom. A broom does not rust if you use similar metals for the screws and the metal bracket. On the other hand, dissimilar metals cause bimetallic corrosion, affecting a broom's durability. Therefore, when choosing screws to hold the metal bracket on a long-handle broom, select non-reactive ones.

Match Replacement Handle to Metal Bracket

A crucial advantage with brooms equipped with threaded metal brackets is the ease with which you can replace the long handle. Nonetheless, you should match a broom handle with the metal bracket. For instance, if a broom is equipped with a threaded metal bracket, install a threaded handle only because forcing a non-threaded handle through a threaded bracket risks breaking it. In contrast, non-threaded long handles are only compatible with non-threaded metal brackets. All you need to keep the handle stable is tightening a screw or wing nut on the metal bracket.
